The western section of the "Lainzer Tunnel" connects the two existing longdistance traffic tracks of the western railway line with the new route Vienna – St. Pölten between the railway station Vienna Meidling and the main railway station St. Pölten and the connections in direction Hütteldorf/Westbahnhof as well as the connection tunnel.

The tunnel is partly situated under residential area and therefore a complex noise and vibration protection system is necessary. Due to the installation of different floating track slab systems adjusted to the surroundings the best protection for the inhabitants is guaranteed. Twelve turnouts as well as for the first time a crossing with a movable core part for speeds of up to 150 km/h are applied on floating track slab systems.

The tunnel safety concept is state-of-the-art and includes e.g. a fire water supply line, emergency exits and a system of escape routes. An access for emergency vehicles to the adjacent Wienerwald Tunnel is also part of the measures.
