Mariahilfer Strasse (length 1,500 m) in the 6th and 7th district of Vienna was redesigned to a modern shopping street. For this purpose extensive preliminary investigations were carried out. Furthermore a contractor for the design project was sought in the scope of an architectural competition. A detailed road project ready for construction was elaborated in close cooperation with the authorities of the city of Vienna and the political representatives.

The objective of the redesign was to offer more space to the pedestrians for strolling, walking and lingering on the one hand and to decelerate car traffic and connect the two sides of the road on the other hand. In addition to a new pavement in the pedestrian zone with paving stones of different sizes and shades of grey, specifically designed seating furniture and water tables were set up to invite pedestrians to stay for a while.
