KliNa Spotlight: Residential Building D1, Settlement Wienerfeld West

Wed, 17.06.2026

The first completed building in the settlement Wienerfeld West combines climate protection, energy efficiency and social sustainability and sets standards for sustainable residential building.

Residential building D1 was the first building of the settlement Wienerfeld West which was completed in 2025. The project is part of a large-scale city development project by Wiener Wohnen, which comprises all in all 23 residential buildings. Residential building D1 is an example for one of the two designated building methods in the quarter and shows how sustainable residential building can combine ecological, economic and social requirements.

Sustainability has already been consistently considered in the design. The building received the “klimaaktiv Silber” declaration both in the design and the completion phase. Furthermore, building products according to the ecological building criteria of the city of Vienna were used, which complied with the high standards regarding environmental compatibility and conservation of resources.

An essential contribution to climate protection is the well-aimed use of wood as climate-friendly building material. Wood binds CO₂ in the long run and reduces resource consumption compared to conventional construction methods. At the same time the material selection supports a sustainable and future-oriented construction culture.

Residential building D1 also relies on energy efficiency during operation. Component activation, intelligent shading systems and a comprehensive energy concept contribute to a permanent reduction of the heating and cooling demand. This results in a sustainable decline in operating costs and CO₂ emissions of the building.

„ Sustainability means to us to consider the whole life cycle of a building – from material selection to energy supply up to the use by the residents. “

DI Katharina Indra, Project Managerin

Sustainability means to us to consider the whole life cycle of a building – from material selection to energy supply up to the use by the residents. Residential building D1 combines numerous ecological and social measures in a holistic concept and therefore is an important contribution for future-proof residential space”, declared the responsible project manager Katharina Indra of FCP.

Apart from ecological aspects, social sustainability also played a central role. Jointly useable free spaces like a common water basin create possibilities for encounter and promote the exchange within the neighbourhood. Thus, prerequisites for lively and working residential communities are created.

Complementarily, a special focus was put on the design of the outside areas. Thanks to careful free space design the local micro-climate is positively influenced, which strengthens liveability, greening and climate adaptation.

The promotion of environmentally friendly mobility is part of the sustainability concept. Bike parking spaces for residents and visitors create attractive frame conditions for climate-friendly locomotion in the daily routine.

FCP supported the project with an interdisciplinary scope of services. The experts are responsible for the fields tender, planning coordination (health & safety engineering), building physics including supervision of the klimaaktiv-declaration, fire protection, agricultural engineering as well as design-build management. The Competence Centers Acoustics, Dynamics, Building Physics, Measurement & Instrumentation, Tender Procedure & Cost Determination, Health & Safety Engineering, Building Design and Water Management were involved.
