KliNa Spotlight: Education Centre YOCA
Viennese Chamber of Labour relies on circular building and demolition with material register.
A new, inclusive education centre of the Viennese Chamber of Labour called YOCA for youths and young adults under 30 years is being established at Plösslgasse 13 in Vienna. The project is designed by Haas Cook Zemmrich STUDIO2050 and pursues certifications according to ÖGNI/DGNB GOLD as well as klimaaktiv GOLD. The focus of design is circular economy and resource-efficient construction.
Demolition of the existing building: Urban mining as source
The existing building at the site is currently being demolished. The elimination of hazardous substances and extraneous material will be concluded in July 2026. This demolition is performed according to the principles of sustainable dismantling and circular economy practice. In this process social urban mining was applied as well: components and materials were systematically registered before demolition and recycled or further utilized.
„ Thanks to the material register and the DGNB building resource pass, we achieve transparency on the materials used and lay the foundation for a sustainable circular economy in construction “

Design for disassembly and digital material documentation
For the new construction of the education centre YOCA the principle “Design for Disassembly (DfD)” is consistently used. The objective is a construction method which enables later separation, disassembly and re-use of components. FCP supervises this process by a transparent documentation of the planned and used materials, among other things by means of a material register and DGNB-building resource pass.
The information on material origin, combination possibilities, separability and disassembly is prepared in digital form with a BIM-supported evaluation tool. Thus, a basis for a sustainable and future-proof construction method should be created in the long run.
“Our target is to integrate sustainability into the planning process from the beginning. Thanks to the material register and the DGNB building resource pass we achieve transparency on the materials used and lay the foundation for maintaining them as valuable resources in future. Digital planning methods like BIM are an essential component for this sustainable circular economy in construction”, says Albana Deralla, project manager of FCP.
