KliNa Project of the Month 04/2026: Life-Cycle Tool for Sustainable Traffic Infrastructure
15 April 2026. The FCP.VCE company group gave an important impetus for sustainability, innovation and data-based decision making in infrastructure with the research project “LZinfra”. Together with leading partners from science and construction a life-cycle tool for standardized sustainability assessment of traffic infrastructures was developed.
Between March 2023 and February 2026 a practical, scalable assessment system, which integrates ecological and economical aspects over the whole life cycle, was created on behalf of central stakeholders like ASFINAG, ÖBB and further industry representatives.
Holistic sustainability assessment over the life cycle
LZinfra focuses on a coherent methodology on life-cycle analysis (LCA) of traffic infrastructure projects. Models are systematically assessed – not only based on life-cycle costs (LCC), but also by means of 11 environmental eco-balance indicators, including emissions, resource consumption and use of energy.
The result:
Well-founded bases for decision for sustainable infrastructure projects – already in early design phases.
Digital tool solution for design, construction and award
The experts of the Competence Center Life Cycle Engineering & Asset Management of FCP.VCE are responsible for central development services:
- Development and integration of ecological databases
- Programming of the digital tool landscape
- Interface development for system integration
- Performance of complex computer simulations
The tool based on modules enables assessments on several levels:
- Corridor level (preliminary project and route options)
- Structural level (optimization of design)
- Building site level (process optimization & award and bidding phase)
Thus, LZinfra has become a continuous controlling instrument for sustainable infrastructure projects.
Added value for the construction industry and public clients
LZinfra not only supports the optimization of individual structures but also enables strategic decisions on system level. The tool makes a specific contribution to the:
- Reduction of CO₂-emissions and other environmental quantities
- Increase of resource efficiency
- Increase of transparency in design and award processes
„ LZinfra enables the standardized computed deduction and comparison of sustainability in traffic infrastructure construction - over all project phases. “
Robert Veit-Egerer, project manager
“LZinfra enables the standardized computed deduction and comparison of sustainability in traffic infrastructure construction - over all project phases”, said project manager Robert Veit-Egerer (FCP.VCE).
“In particular regarding the climate targets it is decisive to make the right decisions as early as possible.”
Research with an impact: Based on DECARBONISATION FIRST
LZinfra is based on the findings of the traffic infrastructure research project “DECARBONISATION FIRST” and consistently further develops the latter. The combination of scientific methods and practice-oriented tool development creates an efficient instrument for:
- designers
- infrastructure operators
- construction companies
FCP.VCE as innovation partner of the construction industry
FCP.VCE underlines its position as leading innovation partner for sustainable infrastructure, digitization and research in civil engineering with LZinfra. The objective is to develop future-proof solutions for climate-friendly infrastructure projects – efficient, data-based and resource-saving.
