Aspern Bridge
The overall refurbishment of Aspern Bridge in Vienna is part of the restoration programme of the municipal department MA29 for all bridges over the Danube Canal and also part of the project First Mega-bike-highway of the city of Vienna. The latter closed the gap between the second district and the Ring (connection to Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstrasse).

Aspern Bridge is (like almost all Danube Canal bridges) a three-span structure (frame with two short cantilevers) with a total length of approx. 90m and a main span of approx. 60m. The structure consists of a girder grid of steel with four main longitudinal girders and a reinforced concrete deck slab (without composite action). Within the scope of the overall refurbishment the reinforced deck slab was maintained, the pedestrian and cycling areas, however, were demolished and replaced with reinforced concrete composite slabs to be able to cover the load case “strayed heavy goods vehicle”, which had not been considered up to now.
Apart from concrete rehabilitation of the reinforced concrete deck slab and the new pedestrian and cycle tracks both expansion joints were exchanged, seals and pavements were renewed, the lateral bridge rail was increased, and the corrosion protection of the whole steel structure was completely renewed.
Release for traffic for the repaired bridge was end of May 2024.
