Green Track

Research project

The prerequisites for an optimized green track were developed for new sections of Vienna’s tram network in the scope of the research project ’Grüngleis‘ sponsored by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

The main objective of the research project "green track", funded by the FFG, was the development of a new green track for Vienna, taking into account a site-specific, easy to care and resistant planting and the optimization of the track superstructure. Other key objectives were the elaboration of an assessment model to evaluate the impact of tram construction projects on the environment based on various performance indicators (used resources, emissions, etc.), the technical evaluation of noise emission of existing and new green track and the cost comparison (LCC) with other track systems. The project was carried out in cooperation with the BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences), Vienna University of Technology and the Wiener Linien (Vienna public transportation operator).
