Heiligenstädter Brücke is an important traffic axis between the 19th and 20th district of Vienna which is currently extensively restored. On the one hand, this complete restoration comprises the (conventional) refurbishment of the existing bridge structure (renewal of concrete and asphalt surfaces, sealing works, exchange of the expansion joints etc.), on the other hand the erection of a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists parallel to the existing structure (as important closing of the gap in the cycle track network between the districts) as well as two pedestrian and cycling ramps as connection between the bridge and the ways along both sides of the Donaukanal.

The new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is a three-span reinforced concrete or reinforced concrete composite structure with spans of 13.3+62.0+18.6m, which results in a total length of the structure of 93.9m. The spans on the margins are reinforced concrete prefabricated parts with a deck made of in-situ concrete; the main span is a reinforced concrete composite structure with bars and girts of steel and the deck of in-situ concrete. The new pedestrian and cycling ramps are steel structures with an orthotropic plate. The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists temporarily serves as bypass for the traffic during restoration before it is assigned as bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

A special highlight of the building site was the bringing in and lifting in of the reinforced concrete prefabricated parts and the steel girder for the main span, which weighed about 180t. A fast-motion video of the lifting in of the steel girder can be watched here:

The completion of the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is planned for March 2022. Then starts the rehabilitation of the existing structure, which will take until autumn 2022. The pedestrian and cycling ramp on the side of the 19th district will be mounted in spring of 2022; the ramp on the side of the 20th district will only follow in late summer of 2022, as the decision for construction was only taken late.
