Environment & Resources

Understand systems, assess impacts, develop sustainable solutions.

Technical infrastructure and buildings are in close interaction with their environment. Water, soil, air, noise and vibrations as well as climate changes and increasing demands regarding sustainability affect design, realisation and operation.

In the field of environment & resources we connect natural scientific analyses with engineering implementation. Our objective is to develop buildings and infrastructures in an ecologically compatible, economically sustainable and long-term operational way.

Sustainability does not arise in an isolated way – it is the result of precise analysis and responsible planning.

Integrated consideration of water, soil and climate

Water management is a central focus of our services. We deal with drinking water, rainwater management, wastewater disposal as well as surface and underground water. Increasing heavy rain events increase the significance of flood analyses, 2D simulations, official verification procedures and climate-resilient planning concepts.

Additionally, we analyse geotechnical boundary conditions and soil-structure interactions. This enables early recognition of risks and creates resilient decision bases for design, implementation and operation. Consequently, coordinated overall concepts are developed where water management, infrastructure and architecture are interlocked.

Emissions, impacts and protective systems

Air pollutants, noise and vibrations are important influencing factors for design, construction and operation in the urban and infrastructural environment. We carry out emission and impact analyses, perform predictions with numerical models and assess the results based on valid laws and guidelines.

An example is comprehensive noise mapping for Vienna assigned in 2022, which is the basis for an extensive assessment of the noise situation.

In the field of acoustics and noise protection our service spectrum ranges from measurements and analyses to predictions up to surveys. Furthermore, we analyse dynamic impacts on structures and develop measures for vibration protection. Problems regarding building physics are also considered in the planning process in an integrative way – from thermal building optimisation with simulations for the assessment of vegetation measures up to noise and room acoustics.

Assurance of life cycles and assets

To us sustainability means holistic consideration of structures for their whole service life. We predict condition developments, derive maintenance measures and assess direct and indirect life cycle costs with integral life cycle models like our LCCO2-calculation tool.

Site evaluations and monitoring concepts by means of measurements and analyses contribute to long-term assurance of load-bearing capacity, safety and functionality of structures.

We consider environment & resources connecting elements between technology, nature and society. By means of the combination of environmental analyses, engineering design and life cycle assessment we create solutions which merge ecological, technical and economical requirements.
